Privacy Policy

1. Information We Collect

When you use LanternSurface or interact with our services, we may collect the following categories of information:

• Account information: email address and password (stored as a bcrypt hash).
• API usage data: prompts you send, model responses, token counts, and conversation identifiers.
• Billing information: processed through Stripe. We do not store your credit card number. Stripe retains payment details under their own PCI compliance.
• Technical data: IP address, user agent, and request timestamps for security and rate limiting.

2. How We Use Your Information

We use collected information to:

• Provide and operate the LanternSurface service, including conversation memory and context compaction.
• Process payments and credit top ups through Stripe.
• Enforce rate limits and prevent abuse.
• Communicate service updates or account notices.

3. Data Storage and Retention

Your data is stored on infrastructure we control in the United States. Conversation content, messages, and context summaries are retained as long as your account is active. You may request deletion of your conversation data at any time through the dashboard reset feature or by contacting us.

After account deletion, we retain billing records for the period required by law and then delete all personal data.

4. Data Sharing

We do not sell your data. We share information only with:

• Upstream model providers: prompts and messages are sent to the AI model you select so it can generate responses. These providers have their own privacy policies governing that data.
• Stripe: payment and billing data as described above.
• Cloudflare: network traffic passes through Cloudflare infrastructure for security and performance.

5. Embeddings and Search

When you ingest documents into the knowledge base, we generate vector embeddings using a local model running on our infrastructure. Your documents and their embeddings are not sent to any third party embedding service. All embedding computation happens on our servers.

6. Security

We use encryption in transit (TLS) and encryption at rest for sensitive fields such as API keys. Passwords are hashed with bcrypt (cost 12). Access tokens are stored in httpOnly Secure cookies. Despite these measures, no system is perfectly secure, and we cannot guarantee absolute security.

7. Your Rights

You may:

• Access your data through the LanternSurface dashboard.
• Request deletion of your conversation data at any time.
• Request export of your data by contacting us.
• Request account deletion by contacting us.

8. Children

Our services are not directed to children under 13. We do not knowingly collect personal information from children under 13.

9. Changes to This Policy

We may update this privacy policy from time to time. We will post the revised version on this page with an updated effective date. Continued use of the service after changes constitutes acceptance of the revised policy.
